NFL: Week 16 Review, Week 17 Preview
Bad weather, history-making and the playoff push – NFL, week #16 style….
Week #16 Highlights (15-0) NEW ENGLAND 28 (1-14) MIAMI 7
Whoever is reading this has at least one thing in common. The fact that none of us have ever witnessed a 15-0 NFL team. The Patriots can lay claim to this prize, although they of course have much bigger plans in mind. Randy Moss caught 2 of Tom Brady’s 3 touchdown passes on the day, while Miami Quarterback Cleo Lemon was 18-41, for 171 yards in the Dolphins’ 14th loss of the season. New England led 28-0 at Halftime, with the outcome never in doubt. So much for the weak Pats running game. Laurence Maroney killed that noise with a 14 carry, 156 yard explosion with a 59 yard touchdown run to boot.
(9-6) TENNESSEE 10 (3-12) NY JETS 6
Tennessee did what they had to do in the playoff race, namely win over a hapless Jets team that has come to play the last few weeks. However, Tennessee had better get themselves together or a first-round loss (provided they make the playoffs) awaits them. Vince Young hangs by a thread between helping his team win and helping them lose. His 12-22, for a buck-66 in the air was enough, while the Titans’ D held the Jets to only 68 yards on the ground. Jerricho Crotchery (love that name-he should be in the WWE with that tag) had a great day, pulling in 8 balls for 152 yards and a TD in the loss.
(10-5) SEATTLE 27 (4-11) BALTIMORE 6
Another week, another Ravens thrashing. This team has lost their steam and given up on Head Coach Brian Billick. Seattle scored 21 unanswered second-quarter points en route to their 10th win of the season. They have consistently been the class of a pathetic NFC West, and nothing feels as good as home-cooking and Baltimore on the schedule. Shaun Alexander was back in form, going for 73 yards on 13 carries. Troy Smith made his first start ever at quarterback for the Ravens and it showed, with 2 fumbles and 16-33 passing, for 199 yards.
(7-8) ARIZONA 30 (3-12) ATLANTA 27 (OT)
The up and down Cardinals eked one out over the sorry Falcons in the desert. Credit to Atlanta who hung in with nothing to play for, outscoring Arizona 13-3 in the 4th quarter to force overtime. The teams combined for 842 total yards of offense, while Neil Rackers earned the game winning, 31 yard field goal for the Cardinals. Kurt Warner was outstanding, going 36-53, for 361 yards and 3 TD’s. Receiver Anquan Boldin reached out for 13 of those passes for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Roddy White was a standout for the Falcons, getting hit for 12 catches and 141 yards.
(5-10) SAN FRANCISCO 21 (9-6) TAMPA BAY 19
Similar to the Seattle Seahawks, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been the head of a very weak pack in their division and have been inconsistent to boot. A terrible loss on the road for the Bucs, who will pay for this defeat in playoff positioning and momentum-flattening. Frank Gore was the catalyst for the 49ers, leading the team in rushing (21-89 yards), and receiving (4 grabs for 43 yards). Tampa Bay outgained San Francisco 434-213 yards, but the Buccaneers were held to only 67 yards on the ground. Credit 49ers’ Quarterback Shaun Hill. He had a relatively weak game, completing only 11 of 24 passes, but threw 3 touchdowns in the win.
(7-8) PHILADEPHIA 38 (7-8) NEW ORLEANS 23
Two teams with identical records going in different directions. All credit to Philadelphia for keeping their heads in their season. Donovan McNabb was outstanding, throwing 3 touchdowns on 24-35 passing for 263 yards. A season-crusher for the Saints, who lost at home in what will go down as a forgettable season. The Saints were held to 65 yards rushing, and that excitement that last year was on display of the offensive side of the ball was again nowhere to be seen. Brian Westbrook was his usual clutch self, carrying for an even 100 yards on 17 carries.
(11-4) JACKSONVILLE 49 (4-11) OAKLAND 11
Reverse records and reverse fortunes for these two teams this season. Jacksonville dominated throughout and again looked like a beast to contend with in the AFC. Their test will come soon enough in the playoffs against real competition on the road-then we will see what we have in the Jags. However, for this week they fed on the hapless Raiders, losers now on three straight, while Jacksonville won their 3rd in a row, and 5 of their last 6. Fred Taylor was his consistent self, rushing for 111 yards on only 7 carries. Oakland’s Quarterbacks were a combined 13-31 passing, for 129 yards and 3 interceptions. The Jaguars led 28-3 at the half at home, forcing 4 Raider turnovers in the contest.
(10-5) NY GIANTS 38 (7-8) BUFFALO 21
Keeping their second-half of the season blues at bay, the Giants won big despite another poor performance by Eli Manning. Weather was poor, but Manning was only 7-15, for 111 yards, 2 interceptions and 5 fumbles. The Giants needed all of their ground attack, which was humming to the tune of Ahmad Bradshaw’s 17-151 yards, including an 88 yard touchdown, and Brandon Jacobs going for 145 yards on 21 carries. The Bills were outgained 385-244 yards at home, with both teams committing 4 turnovers. Buffalo jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but then New York countered with a 38-7 rout from there on in. The Giants clinch another playoff berth which will be of the wildcard variety.
(6-9) CHICAGO 35 (12-3) GREEN BAY 7
Sometimes you have the better team and the other guy just has your number. That is the case this season as the Bears swept the season series, providing the Packers with 2 of their 3 losses. The Bears used a 22-0 second-half in freezing conditions to kill all hopes of a top NFC-seed for Green Bay. Although Green Bay outgained Chicago on offense, Special Teams was the difference in this one. Packers’ Punter Jon Ryan had 2 punts blocked, another one for 9 yards and if that was not bad enough, muffed a snap as well (remember this the next time you have a bad day!) The Bears won despite only 101 passing yards.
(13-2) INDIANAPOLIS 38 (7-8) HOUSTON 15
The Colts enjoy beating up on their division rivals. In jumping out to a 24-7, first-half lead, Indianapolis looked polished and ready for the post-season. Peyton Manning was excellent, going 28-35, for 311 yards and 3 touchdowns. Receiver Reggie Wayne was the recipient of 10 of those completions for 143 yards. The Texans committed 3 turnovers and had the ball just over 24 minutes. The Texans must become more consistent against the better teams if they wish to compete.
(7-8) DETROIT 25 (4-11) KANSAS CITY 20
The disappointing season (to say the least) of the Kansas City Chiefs is mercifully coming to an end. Herm Edwards’ squad outgained the Lions on the road 407-236 yards, but the Lions came out 19-0 and stayed up all day. Lions’ Quarterback John Kitna was only 9-16 passing, for 115 yards and one interception, but Detroit’s Special Teams scored 9 points in the effort to help end their 6 game losing streak. Tony Gonzalez was hit for 10 catches, totaling 137 yards in the loss for Kansas City.
(6-9) CINCINNATI 19 (9-6) CLEVELAND 14
A crushing loss for Cleveland as they have let their divisional chances wither, and have given life to Tennessee in the wildcard race at 9-6. Conversely, the Bengals were able to upset a hated rival’s best-laid plans. Browns’ Quarterback Derek Anderson had 4 interceptions, with the Browns losing despite outgaining Cincy 380-270 yards. The Bengals outscored Cleveland 19-0 in the first-half, with both teams combining for 7 turnovers on the day in poor weather conditions. Cincinnati Running Back Kenny Watson was the horse, gaining 130 yards on 30 carries.
(10-5) PITTSBURGH 41 (3-12) ST. LOUIS 24
Pittsburgh came away with their 10th win, but their season may have been broken along with Willie Parker’s leg on his first carry of the contest. Parker, the NFL’s leading rusher, is done for the year. However, backup Running Back Najeh Davenport rolled for 123 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries in the win. Outgaining the Rams 425-316 yards, the Steelers clinched their division by virtue of Cleveland losing to Cincinnati. Steelers’ Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was very effective, going 16-20, for 261 yards and 3 touchdowns.
COWBOYS PLAYA’ HATER JOURNAL — ENTRY #5
10:07 AM – No alarm and no stomach pain waking me up this Saturday morning! I jump out of bed and get down to the business of making eggs, french toast and cereal. The appetite is back, son.
11:13 AM – I gleefully remember last week’s Cowboy dud/thumping at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles. No TD’s, Romo shaken and stirred, invisible T.O. Should I check the schedule. Why not, while the getting is good. 12-2 has been joined by another 12-2, that being Green Bay. Another stumble by the ‘Boys and a #2 seed may be in the cards. Oooh, aaah. What to make of this? Saturday night national game at Carolina. Horrors on the surface, but wait. The Panthers just spanked Seattle, and its time for some deep-south home cooking. John Fox may be coaching for his future paychecks as well. Mmmm..it has possibilities. One more screw up like last week and Green Bay could claim home-field throughout. La la la la la …I’m Lovin’ It.
2:00 PM – My doorbell rings and a driver hands me a manila envelope. I sign for it and look at the return address, “Foxborough”. I go back to my lunch and take a bite out of my ham and turkey sandwich. I slowly open the envelope, and find one piece of paper, no letterhead, just a scribble with two words, “Jessica Simpson”. Yes….yes, dear “Hooded One”. It could only be your handiwork that plants the lovely tart between Quarterback and Wide Receiver. Well played, “Hooded One”. I begin to laugh. Laugh so hard that I begin choking on my sandwich. I quickly grab my Spalding basketball, do a crossover, and miss an open jumper from the key. Good thing I know how to do a “Hinrich” Maneuver.
7:00 PM – I settle into my bad boy/lazy-boy and grab the trusty remote. I am watching this one, but wait. It is on the NFL Network. Damn you, NFL Gods!! Finally one game on this crappy network that I want to watch and no go. OK. I will follow this somehow.
11:00 PM – Smoke signals tell me that the Carolina Panthers were boys sent to do a man’s work. The Cowboys win 20-13, also clinching the #1 seed in the NFC when combined with the Packers defeat. Carolina continued a putrid season, falling to 6-9. The ‘Boys hold the ball for 39 minutes on the road. Terrell Owens has an ankle injury and the Cowboys are not sure if he will play next week in what amounts to a meaningless game. Not a great day for all of us Cowboy Haters. However, they did not look great, they had a kind of off-week again, so the sky is not all dark.
Schedule please, although at 13-2 they are set in the NFC. At Washington. Let the ‘Skins rough them up a bit and then we will check what’s what during Wildcard Week. My stomach rumbles, but not too loudly…

Week #17 – Last Call For Alcohol/Sneak Peek Essentials (15-0) NEW ENGLAND AT (10-5) NY GIANTS
Here is it, finally upon us. We as NFL fans have been imagining this possibility for weeks, a 15-0 Patriots team playing for perfection. History can be made at the Meadowlands as Brady & Co. look to take the next step on the road to history. Don’t look now, but they are only 4 wins away from their goal of 19-0 and Supe glory. It is on the NFL Network, so be sure not to be able to watch history being made.
(5-10) SAN FRANCISCO AT (9-6) CLEVELAND
Cleveland has put themselves in all kinds of trouble by losing to Cincinnati. Cleveland needs a win and should have it all their way with the 49ers playing out the string. If Cleveland should fold, it is still a winning season, albeit a disappointing one in the end.
(7-8) DETROIT AT (12-3) GREEN BAY
Meaningless game to end the campaign for both teams. Green Bay has their bye locked up and hopes to stay healthy. Detroit folded like a tent in the wicked Michigan Winter, losing 6 of their last 7.
(7-8) NEW ORLEANS AT (6-9) CHICAGO
What was the NFC Championship Game a year ago is now a muddled mess to end the string. Both teams had hugely disappointing seasons, and are both desperate to find out what happened to their 2006 mojo. The Conference got much better, and they reversed course. That’s how fast it can happen in the NFL.
(10-5) PITTSBURGH AT (4-11) BALTIMORE
The Ravens’ season has fallen into little, bitty pieces after letting the Patriots slip out of town unblemished. The Steelers could use one more win to feel better about themselves as they have shown inconsistent ways down the stretch. No Willie Parker the rest of the way is a killer, but Davenport and Big Ben will have to pick up the slack. Win or lose, Pittsburgh will be suiting up the first week of the playoffs.
(10-5) SEATTLE AT (3-12) ATLANTA
I didn’t think the Falcons were so hot with Michael Vick, but my Goodness! The year comes to a merciful close at home for Atlanta, with their QB behind bars and their Head Coach in the college ranks. Seattle could also use a win to finish up on as their inconsistent play cannot be sitting well with Mike Holmgren. They too will be putting on the pads come Wildcard Weekend.
(11-4) JACKSONVILLE AT (7-8) HOUSTON
A game with nothing on the line other than for the Jags to finish strong on their way to the #5 seed during Wildcard Weekend. Houston has been inconsistent but they do have some things to build upon for next season. However, they are in a beast of a division and it will take time and a lot of work to climb out of their position.
(13-2) DALLAS AT (7-7)* WASHINGTON
Depending on the outcome of Sunday Night’s game, the Redskins could be playing for all the marbles in this one, while Dallas can rest easy with the whole NFC needing to go through Dallas to get to the Supe.
(6-9) CAROLINA AT (9-6) TAMPA BAY
Tampa Bay has come out of the muck of the NFC South to cop division honors and go to the playoffs. Carolina has been a big disappointment and their Coach, John Fox may be on the way out. Tampa Bay will be playing Wildcard Weekend.
(7-8) BUFFALO AT (7-8) PHILADELPHIA
It is fitting that these two meet to finish what was a difficult year in many ways for both teams. Both could have mailed it in but did not in the second-half of the season. Much props to both coaches and teams for playing hard, hanging tough and giving their fans the best that they could.
(9-6) TENNESSEE AT (13-2) INDIANAPOLIS
Indianapolis has nothing to play for here, with the bye and home-field in their fist game locked. The Titans need a win as they are tied with Cleveland for the last playoff spot in the AFC. It would be good for Tennessee in any event to show themselves they can win in Indy regardless.
(6-9) CINCINNATI AT (1-14) MIAMI
Mercy on fans of both cities by ending this season already. Miami saved themselves from ultimate ridicule by beating Baltimore recently, thereby ending any drama of an 0-16 season. The Bengals have been awful, period. Wholesale changes are coming for both teams this offseason.
(3-12) ST. LOUIS AT (7-8) ARIZONA
Not sure of the reason to play this one, other than the fact that it is on the schedule and everyone needs to get paid. The Rams have been pitiful, while the Cardinals have somewhat pitiful.
(9-5)* SAN DIEGO AT (4-11) OAKLAND
San Diego hopes to go into the Wildcard Weekend with a bounce in their step, while Oakland allows just about everyone they play to have their way. The Chargers have rebounded nicely from a terrible start to division champ.
(8-6)* MINNESOTA AT (6-8)* DENVER
Both teams have surprised this year but in vastly different ways. The Vikings, with stud Adrian Peterson, have looked the part of playoff team recently. This, while Denver has never gotten off the ground and will miss the playoffs as a boring, also-ran.
(4-11) KANSAS CITY AT (3-12) NY JETS
No comment. OK—a few comments. Both teams have been bad from the get-go. Both are huge disappointments and were considered playoff-caliber franchises going into the year. A combined 7-23 and it will show this coming Sunday.
NFL: Week 15 Review, Week 16 Preview
Wild weather and outcomes highlight week #15 in the NFL. The playoff picture comes slowly into focus, while a Cowboy-hater gets his groove on.…
Week #15 Highlights (10-4) JACKSONVILLE 29 (9-5) PITTSBURGH 22
Suddenly at a very pedestrian 9-5, the Steelers lost what was billed by some as the game of the week in the NFL to the up and down Jaguars. Pittsburgh, at home no less, falls into a tie with the upstart Cleveland Browns in the AFC North, although the Steelers do own the tiebreaker. David Garrard’s 3 touchdown passes complemented Fred Taylor’s dominant day on the ground (25-147). Willie Parker answered for Pittsburgh in another bad-weather game for the Steelers with a 100 yard day of his own, while the Jags outgained Pittsburgh 421-217 in yardage.
(12-2) GREEN BAY 33 (3-11) ST. LOUIS 14
Absolutely a tale of two teams headed in opposite directions. Green Bay has been sharp all year long and today was no exception. The Packers lock up a first-round bye in shutting out the Rams in the second-half at St. Louis. Steven Jackson, the Oregon State product, is back to his old form, piling on 143 yards and a TD for the Rams. The Rams also kept the ball over 36 minutes in the game and outgained the Pack 364-279. As a side note, Brett Favre became the all-time NFL leader in passing yards. They will need all of that and more in the NFC playoffs.
(9-5) TAMPA BAY 37 (3-11) ATLANTA 3
Is there some type of mercy rule that can be implemented for the poor Atlanta Falcons? Another drubbing, this time at the hands of the Bucs, 37-3. While we’re at it, can someone give Jon Gruden an official, unannounced, major league baseball drug test, because his team has gotten large very quickly. Officially running things in the NFC South, the Buccaneers held the ball just shy of 43 minutes, while outgaining the Falcons 285-133. Maybe Bobby Petrino jumped ship at the right time after all, as Atlanta Quarterback Chris Redman went 4-15, for a mere 34 yards and 2 picks. Their leading receiver was Laurent Robinson, who had 1 catch for 18 yards.
(7-7) NEW ORLEANS 31 (6-8) ARIZONA 24
In what amounted to a playoff game for both teams, the Saints, led by Drew Brees’ outstanding 26-30 for 315 yard and 2 TD performance, outdueled Kurt Warner (19-30, 3 TD’s) in The Big Easy. Saints’ Receiver Marques Colston grabbed 8 catches for 114 yards in the win.
Arizona….you have been rendered….OBSOLETE!
(6-8) CAROLINA 13 (9-5) SEATTLE 10 MY PREVIEW OF THIS GAME FROM LAST WEEK’S ISSUE:
Here is the kind of moment that Seattle is famous for showing the NFL that they are not meant for prime-time. A meaningless opponent, they should strap it on and come out smoking. They do have the #3-seed to take care of as well. Carolina continues their inept campaign.
There is a word for games like this: embarrassing! With a paltry 44 yards on the ground, the Seahawks played down to their opposition and payed for it with Shaun Alexander gaining 17 yards on 7 carries. This after putting up 42 last week against Arizona. Mike Holmgren needs to reassess what his team is about as a playoff debacle if forthcoming if their offense does not drastically improve, and fast. Maybe a job saver for John Fox.
(9-5) CLEVELAND 8 (7-7) BUFFALO 0
In blizzard conditions, the Browns shut out Buffalo at home, as well as shutting out any chance of a post-season for the Bills. The weather allowed only 261 combined passing yards between the teams, while Jamal Lewis needs a game ball after going 33-163. Credit to the Bills for hanging tough in a difficult and emotional year for them. Look out Pittsburgh—the Browns are tied with you at 9-5 and have all AFC North momentum.
(14-0) NEW ENGLAND 20 (3-11) NY JETS 10
Windy conditions forced both teams to ground their attacks some, with Laurence Maroney going for 104 yards on 26 carries. The destruction of the Jets that I had predicted did not come to pass, with Chad Pennington having a good game against the tough Patriots defense (25-38, 186 yards). All you need to know about these two teams occurred in the 4th quarter on back-to-back possessions. Stephen Gostkowski hit a 34 yard FG for the Pats to increase their lead to 20-10. The Jets countered with Mike Nugent missing his 35 yarder. Game over.
(1-13) MIAMI 22 (4-10) BALTIMORE 16
Finally! It took Overtime, but history will not remember that or that the Fish beat a 4-10 Ravens team loaded with decay. A win is a win as Cleo Lemon led the Miami attack with a 23-39 day, for 315 yards as the Dolphins only had 72 yards on the ground.
Brian Billick—You and your “Genius” label have been rendered…OBSOLETE!
0-16 “SLEEPING WITH THE FISHES” WATCH
0-16 “Sleeping With The Fishes” Watch—you too, have been rendered…OBSOLETE!
Congrats Fish Fans!
(8-6) TENNESSEE 26 (4-10) KANSAS CITY 17
Tennessee stayed in the hunt at 8-6 with a workman-like win at Kansas City. Three turnovers helped to further contribute to the Chiefs’ disappointing season, as Titans Kicker Rob Bironas’ 4 FG’s helped seal the deal. Vince Young was back on track, with 2 TD passes and he scampered for 32 yards as well. The Titans will still need help in the playoff race as they trail both Jacksonville and Cleveland.
(4-10) SAN FRANCISCO 20 (5-9) CINCINNATI 13
Dear God, can a Brotha’ get some Flex Schedule?
Meaningless fare saw Frank Gore lead the ‘Niners with a 29-138 yard performance. Meanwhile, San Francisco Quarterback Shaun Hill also had a good game, going 21-28, for 197 yards and a TD. I know they played Cincy but the duo worked well together.
(7-7) HOUSTON 31 (6-8) DENVER 13
Houston has quietly put together a very nice season, creeping back to .500 with a thumping of the disappointing Broncos. A two-headed rushing attack carried the Texans, as Ron Dayne (11-67) and Darius Walker (13-66) did pretty much as they pleased versus the Denver defense. Jay Cutler went 27-39, for 254 as Denver looks to him as the future of the franchise. A 14-0 Texans 4th quarter sealed the game, as Denver accumulated only 72 yards on the ground.
Mike Shanahan and your frozen grimace—you have been rendered…OBSOLETE!
(12-2) INDIANAPOLIS 21 (4-10) OAKLAND 14
Unspectacular effort by Manning and company but a 12th win is a 12th win, especially on the road. Peyton went 22-39, for 276 yards and needed them as the ground attack was bottled up to the tune of 58 yards. Oakland had the ball for almost 34 minutes but could not keep up with the higher-powered Colts. Indy has a history of slumping down the regular-season stretch so keep an eye on how they finish.
(9-5) SAN DIEGO 51 (6-8) DETROIT 14
In the role of the New England Patriots this week…yes, the San Diego Chargers. Racking up 50-spots has not been San Diego’s forte this season but look out as the case for (at least) the third-best team in the AFC is being made in Southern California. Detroit, perhaps suffering a hangover from last week’s miserable, last-minute loss to Dallas, was suffocated by the Chargers on both sides of the ball. The stats were freaky. The Chargers rang up a 34-7 halftime lead at home. They controlled the clock for over 41 minutes. They forced 6 turnovers, including 5 John Kitna interceptions. San Diego sprang for 274 rushing yards, including a double 100-yard day in their backfield. Darren Sproles was in for 122 and 2 TD’s, while Ladainian Tomlinson hit for a buck-15 and 2 TD’s as well.
COWBOYS PLAYA’ HATER JOURNAL — ENTRY #4
6:02 AM – Awake before dawn and check my alarm clock. Unfortunately it reads 6:02 AM, on a Sunday morning no less. My stomach provides the alarm this morning however as I stumble into my kitchen for some Fruit Loops and milk. Week 15 is upon me. It has been a dramatic year in the League. Light tries to take a peek at my bowl through the window. I have eaten breakfast and realize that the Cowboys are still on a rampage through the NFC. They can go 13-1 today with a win at home against the downtrodden Eagles. I do not hold much hope as I slink out of the kitchen and head towards the john.
10:00 AM – My cat Frisky jumps on my lap for some quality human time. His whiskers rub against my hand and he stares me in the eyes. Green his eyes are – Eagles green. Maybe a sign? Maybe Frisky is trying to tell me something—between two guys sharing a football Sunday. The talking-heads are loosening up on my TV, and their advice to Eagles’ fans – don’t hold out too much hope.
11:30 AM – I go to my bedroom dresser, and with a short sigh pull out my seldom worn, Eagles #81 T.O. jersey. The silky forest green fits nicely as it slides down from over my head. With tears welling in my eyes I recall the day I bought the shirt, in hopes of beefing up McNabb, T.O. and co.’s chances against the Cowboys, when T.O. was one of Philly’s instead of the dreaded Cowboys. I look down at the 8 and the 1 and call for some kind of reverse mojo from the football Gods. Maybe McNabb and Reid can turn back the clock. You know they would like nothing more. After all, it was T.O. that came into their house, masquerading as one of them and helped burn that home down after the Super Bowl loss to New England. Home life hasn’t been the same since.
7:00 PM – I refuse to watch the game, fearing the worst. I enjoy a robust BK Broiler at my nearby fast-food establishment and make my way back to command central. I carefully grab my remote and click. What?! Whoa, Nellie! What have we here? Dallas, at home, down to the downtrodden Eagles? 10-6 with time running out? Dallas shut out of the end zone all game? Romo a human 13-36, with 3 INT’s? 53 yards on the ground? T.O—where are you? I can’t see you and your 2 catches for 37 yards. 12-2 never tasted so good. Do not look now but they are tied with Green Bay for the best record in the NFC. Maybe the playoffs will have to go through the frozen tundra of hallowed Green Bay after all? No stomach pain today my friends.
I go over to Frisky. He purrs and looks at me with his Eagle-green eyes, and I swear he winks. Maybe I am just giddy from the events of the past few minutes. I wonder if Frisky is getting warmed up for the playoffs….

Week #16 Sneak Peek Essentials (9-5) PITTSBURGH AT (3-11) ST. LOUIS
More Thursday night hijinx from the NFL Network, and a must-see at that. Pittsburgh needs this game all of a sudden. Tied with Cleveland, they may not get out of their own division. A loss and they could be staring down the barrel of a #6 seed, or dare I say even worse…
(12-2) DALLAS AT (6-8) CAROLINA
In what looked like a joke game a few days ago all of a sudden has some real implications to it. Dallas finds itself needing this one as well, as they are tied with Green Bay at 12-2 for Alpha Dog in the NFC. Carolina is fresh from upending Seattle and have to be feeling chipper about themselves.
(12-2) GREEN BAY AT (5-8 PENDING) CHICAGO
This sure looked good on the calendar a few months ago, but now it is Chicago trying to salvage some pride with a bonus of knocking Green Bay out of the top spot in the NFC. Green Bay has to have this game to have any chance of having the playoffs go through Wisconsin.
(9-4, PENDING) NY GIANTS AT (7-7) BUFFALO
Buffalo is kaput for this year but has been game throughout. The G-Men want to keep momentum with a solid playoff push. They should be the #5 seed regardless unless a complete meltdown occurs.
(9-5) CLEVELAND AT (5-9) CINCINNATI
This inter-divisional matchup will actually tell a bit about Cleveland. They are for the first time in a long time the hunted, and with a young team that sometimes spells trouble. If they are for real they will dispatch Cincy with authority and urgency.
(4-10) KANSAS CITY AT (6-8) DETROIT
Someone has to win, right, unless there is a tie. Both teams have faded terribly down the stretch. There has to be something better to do on a Sunday afternoon.
(7-7) HOUSTON AT (12-2) INDIANAPOLIS
The surprising Texans travel to Indy where upstarts never do too well. With the #2 seed theirs, the Colts could cruise but they would like to keep Houston in their place.
(4-10) OAKLAND AT (10-4) JACKSONVILLE
Again, a team (Jacksonville) that is now the hunted must take care of business against an inferior opponent at home. This should be a 41-14 type of game but we will see how serious the Jags are.
(6-7 PENDING) WASHINGTON AT (7-6 PENDING) MINNESOTA
Minnesota fighting for their playoff lives in the #6 hole. They must have a serious dose of Adrian Peterson against a banged-up ‘Skins team. Joe Gibbs has had a shaky season to put it mildly. The cache of Super Bowl pasts may be the only thing holding him up at this point in DC.
(1-13) MIAMI AT (14-0) NEW ENGLAND
Not resting on their laurels, the Dolphins with some swag head off to New England. The Pats are in a chase for history, looking to become the first undefeated team in 35 years in the NFL. Good luck, Fish. You will need it. A Fish win would be the biggest upset in regular-season history. The spread meanwhile will be enormous.
(6-8) PHILADELPHIA AT (7-7) NEW ORLEANS
Suddenly that 6-8 Philly record does not seem so repulsive. They can further enhance their sudden late-season surge at New Orleans against the Saints, who are in the thick of the NFC Wildcard fight. A nice comeback this season for the Saints as well.
(3-11) ATLANTA AT (6-8) ARIZONA
Atlanta has been woeful on and off the field. Arizona has run hold and cold throughout the season. Arizona is due for a win and has .500 to shoot for.
(4-10) BALTIMORE AT (9-5) SEATTLE
Just what that doctor ordered, home cooking and a win on a silver platter, or so it appears. Seattle, though, had better get their story straight, like, now. Baltimore is officially the new Miami.
(3-11) NY JETS AT (8-6) TENNESSEE
Jeff Fisher has earned his cash this season, keeping a young team with an inconsistent Vince Young afloat into the tail-end of the season. The Jets have been atrocious, and with the Titans desperate for a win, it could be a long day for Gang Green.
(9-5) TAMPA BAY AT (4-10) SAN FRANCISCO
The Buccaners look to continue their playoff drive and the pilfering of #3 seed as they head to The Bay. The ‘Niners look to give the Bucs a fight while preparing their young team for next season. Tampa should roll but it is a long ride cross-country.
(6-8) DENVER AT (9-5) SAN DIEGO
The Chargers are home on Monday Night Football against the struggling Broncos. Should be a perfect setup for San Diego to show the entire NFL they mean business. However, the Chargers have been inconsistent this season and these teams know each other very well. An interesting week for San Diego as we wait to see which Charger team will show up.
God’s Press Conference Announcing Patriots Perfect Season
GOD HAS PRESS CONFERENCE – DECLARES PATRIOTS SEASON TO BE PERFECT, INCLUDING UPCOMING SUPER BOWL ROMP
Q: Are you a football fan, God?
God: Of course. I love the game. Sunday is a busy day for me so I put football on Sundays just to unwind a bit. I must admit that although John Madden has lost his fastball, I still like listening to his voice call a game. It reminds me of the 80’s.
Q: There is a rumor you have something to say about the Patriots?
God: Yes…yes, I do. I have declared this season by my touch to be perfect. A glistening, glorious 19-0 vision including a walloping of the Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl.
Q: How involved are you with outcomes of games?
God: Did you watch the Pats-Ravens game last Monday night? (God raises eyebrow). Next question!
Q: What do you think of Belichick’s wardrobe?
God: Great Coach but the ensembles are like he dresses in the dark—Me help him.
Q: Why the Patriots?
God: I have played with the heads of Boston fans for so many years it was time to give something back to the community. I still like that Buckner one personally but enough was enough. Enjoy, Chowderheads (laughs with a roar)!
Q: Has anyone sold their soul in the Patriots’ organization to be ordained like this?
God: (Ponders) We are currently in negotiations. Let’s just say…supermodels, fame, super bowls, cleft chin…you don’t get nothing for nothing.
Q: Anything else you wish to say, Dear God?
God: Yes…one last thing (looks at microphone)….They were, who we thought they were…and we let ‘em off the hook! I always wanted to say that. Stay thirsty my Friends!
NFL Week 14 Review, Week 15 Preview, Dallas Hater Journal
What would Vegas odds before the season be on one team going 16-0 and another going 0-16 in the SAME DIVISION? Last team to go run the table – ‘72 Miami Dolphins. Ironically, it is these same Dolphins that could join the last team to go winless – ‘76 expansion, orange uni-Tampa Bay Buccaneers. When Tampa Coach John McKay was asked during the 1976 season about the execution of his offense, he replied, “I am in favor of it”.
Week #14 Highlights (6-7) WASHINGTON 24 (5-8) CHICAGO 16
In essentially an elimination game for both squads, the Bears came up short as they have done all season long. Once again an NFL game was televised on the NFL Network. By some miracle we were able to have the game transmitted to my friend, Mets N Jets Brian’s house. We subsequently realized that it was a lethargic dose combining Redskins-Bears, Bryant Gumbel and Cris Collingsworth. Fortunately our friend Gil The Thrill brought over some of his famous “Guacamole N’ No-Doze” dip. Last broken out at the disastrous soccer watching party we had recently, it was not only surprisingly delicious, but kept us awake the entire game.
Both starting quarterbacks were crunched out of action in the 1st half, but it was the running games that were aching. Clinton Portis carried the rock for a meager 36 yards on 17 carries, while Adrian Peterson managed one less yard on the same amount of carries. Enjoy your off-season Bears. To quote the original Twilight Zone — YOU HAVE BEEN RENDERED…OBSOLETE!
P.S.—We only quote the original Twilight Zone here, not the knock-offs. I like my TZ’s with Rod Serling blowing cancer fumes in my grill!
(13-0) NEW ENGLAND 34 (9-4) PITTSBURGH 13
In reverting back to their earlier season form, the Patriots shut out the Steelers in the second-half 17-0 in sending a clear message about who currently owns the AFC. Tom Brady’s 4 Touchdowns and 399 passing yards led the Patriots, with his running buddy Randy Moss inhaling 7-135 and 2 of the TD’s. The Steelers had what they wished for in a controlled clock (almost 35:00 of offense) and running game (Willie Parker’s 124 yards on 21 carries). New England just threw it in another gear in the second-half and Pittsburgh could not keep up.
Patriots-haters. Bad news. The best chance at stopping 16-0 has just ended and it failed miserably. Only the Giants who probably will not have anything to play for stand as any real threat the last week of the season.
(6-7) DENVER 41 (4-9) KANSAS CITY 7
Where has this Broncos team been all season? Outgaining the Chiefs 453-129, holding Kansas City’s ground game to 16 yards and Jay Cutler throwing for a Brady-like 4 TD’s. Very impressive if it wasn’t for the fact it was a) against Kansas City, and b) it raises Denver to 5-7.
(8-5) CLEVELAND 24 (3-10) NY JETS 18
The Browns bolstered their playoff chances with a tough 24-18 win at the Meadowlands. Jamal Lewis led the way for Cleveland with 118 yards on 21 carries, while Thomas Jones had a buck-6 for the losing Jets. The Browns win ugly again but the Jets have a habit of playing these kinds of games.
(7-6) MINNESOTA 27 (3-10) SAN FRANCISCO 7
Minnesota’s defense carried the load, holding the 49ers to 7 points and knocking starting quarterback Trent Dilfer out of the game in the first-half. A startling stat – only 4 yards TOTAL for Vikings’ star running back Adrian Peterson on 14 carries. Vikings back Chester Taylor did break a huge 84 yard TD run to help cement the deal.
(9-4) SEATTLE 42 (6-7) ARIZONA 21
The Seahawks gained their 4th NFC West title in a row in demolishing the Cardinals in large part due to Kurt Warner’s 5 INT’s. Matt Hasselbeck conversely threw for 4 TD’s with zero picks. Both defenses were prepared to stop the run, as Edgerrin James led all rushers with a mere 46 yards. Arizona saw its playoffs hopes dealt a severe blow with the loss.
(9-4) NY GIANTS 16 (5-8) PHILADELPHIA 13
Eli Manning led a controlled attack by going 17-31, with 219 yards and a TD. These two teams always have close contests and Sunday was no exception. The game came down to the last play of the game as Eagles’ Kicker David Akers missed a potentially game-tying 57 yards field goal that clanked off the upright. It has been that kind of season for Philly. As for the G-Men, they are enjoying their best second-half in years.
(9-4) JACKSONVILLE 37 (5-8) CAROLINA 6
Carolina takes another pasting, this time at the hands of Jacksonville who looks like a contender whenever they do not play a team from Indiana. The Jags controlled things throughout, holding the ball almost 39:00, and with Fred Taylor rushing for 132 yards including an 80 yard TD. Carolina’s offense was awful, mustering a mere 105 yards in the air, continuing their disappointing campaign.
(8-5) SAN DIEGO 23 (7-6) TENNESSEE 17 (OT)
There are bad losses and then there are potential season-crushers. The Titans let their foot off the pedal for a moment in the 4th quarter and paid perhaps with their season. Down 17-3 on the road in the 4th quarter, the Chargers scored 20 unanswered points including a LaDainian Tomlinson touchdown run (26-146) in overtime for the win. Tennessee quarterback Vince Young continued his regression by throwing for only 121 yards and twice to San Diego defenders.
(6-7) HOUSTON 28 (8-5) TAMPA BAY 14
Houston quarterback Sage Rosenfels continued his spirited and underrated play by leading the Texans to an upset win over the Bucs. Rosenfels was 27-36, for 209 yards and a sharp 3 TD’s and no picks. The Texans’ defense was stingy as well, containing the Tampa running attack to 71 yards.
(7-6) BUFFALO 38 (0-13) MIAMI 14
The Bills continue their competitive play in the face of an emotional season. Their 24 point win at home allows them into the thick of the AFC playoff push. This courtesy of 8 Dolphin fumbles and 5 turnovers. Miami will go down as one of those teams that we watch low-lights of 20-30 years from now. Botched handoffs, picks left and right, you name it. Which brings us to our weekly tradition…
0-16 “SLEEPING WITH THE FISHES” WATCH
The watch is kickin’ at a perfect 0-13. The Bills did not mind kicking a Fish while they were down. 13 down, 3 to go for the books. Fish-makers have poured over the situation….
Week 15 - Baltimore – might not be so fishy-Baltimore is a jinxed head-case at this point…
Week 16 – @ New England – a 70-spot may be dropped on a Brotha’
Week 17 – Cincinnati – medium-fishy
Memo to Miami Brass—win this coming week.
(11-2) GREEN BAY 38 (4-9) OAKLAND 7
A lot of bad teams got spanked this week and this game provided no exception. Green Bay will be the #2 seed in the NFC as they pounced on the Raiders courtesy of rookie Ryan Grant. Grant rushed for 156 yards on 29 carries, to go along with receiver’s Greg Jennings sweet 80 yard TD reception off the arm of Brett Favre. Oakland was outgained 445-233, and one wonders how they have won 4 games this season.
(5-8) CINCINNATI 19 (3-10) ST. LOUIS 10
In a bad, meaningless game, the Bengals rebounded from last week’s drubbing by Pittsburgh and whipped the Rams in Cincy. The disappointing Bengals
were led by running back Rudi Johnson who carried for 92 yards on the day. Cincinnati won despite 2 more interceptions by quarterback Carson Palmer.
(12-1) DALLAS 28 (6-7) DETROIT 27
This is why the Cowboys are going at the minimum to the NFC Title game and the Lions are not going to be doing anything as lofty. Detroit, at home had a 27-14 lead in the 4th quarter when Dallas came storming back with the final 14 points, including the game winner from Tony Romo to Jason Witten with under 2:00 left. Witten had a monster game, with 15 receptions for 138 yards and the game-winning TD. Romo was 35-44, for 302 yards and 2 TD’s.
Which brings us to the ever popular…..
COWBOYS PLAYA’ HATER JOURNAL — ENTRY #3
8:00 AM – I awake to another Sunday of hard-hitting NFL action. However, there is a shadow hovering over my enjoyment of said activity since Labor Day. That shadow is beginning to rival an eclipse in the form of T.O., Romo and Jerry Jones, aka-The Dallas Cowboys. I did not expect major trouble out of Texas this season. Perhaps a 10-6 and a wildcard berth. Dare could I have inquired about another deliciously botched field-goal attempt in the playoffs? This to once again allow me to bid adieu to my least-liked team in pro sports. However, something torrential has happened. A kind of monstrosity has emerged out of the middle of the NFC East to overwhelm my Sunday relaxation….
9:30 AM – I realize again that the Cowboys are participating in a scrimmage in Detroit today. All of a sudden my head begins to ache. I have fears of New England South running through my pounding cranium. Could they lay a 50-spot on the Lions? Be favored by 20 next week? I go back to reading the funnies and try to put such terrible nonsense out of my mind. Maybe I am imagining it all. Maybe I will wake up and Bill Parcells will be screaming at old cement-shoes Drew Bledsoe for not getting out of the pocket. I wish Dallas would play some AFC teams already.
3:00 PM – I call my fellow Cowboy-hater friend, we will call him Spina (his real name—to heck with protecting his identity), and we bask in the glory that is a Detroit Lions 27-14 lead in the 4th quarter. First however, Spina informs me that he has started the Eli Manning Fan Club but until now he is its only member even after sending out 3,000 postcards. He quickly mentions though he expects attendance at future meetings to increase two, maybe three-fold. Spina also tries to gather the forces of the NFC in order to battle the Conference’s Evil Empire, but suggests that we not concern ourselves with that today.
4:00 PM – I come back home after a victory lap to Baskin Robbins. I turn my TV back on and stare in horror. Tony Romo has just hit Jason (15 receptions for 138 yards) Witten with the game winner. 28-27 Cowboys. Home Field is theirs in the NFC.
I look anxiously at my cell phone. It is quietly sitting on the table, not realizing what role it may play in deciding the next Super Bowl Champion, or at the very least my sanity…
5:07 PM – I begin to dial Brett Favre’s cell number but realize he had his chance already to do my bidding. Failed! Failed!
6:00 PM — I think about next week’s schedule but I do not have the nerves for it. I take some Immodium and pick up my cell phone. As I pick up the cell I stare out my window in disbelief. There is a terrible darkness that befalls to the East. He knows I want to contact him. I then breathe a sigh of relief realizing that it should be dark as it is 6:00. Relieved, I slowly place the phone back on the table. It vibrates without anyone calling in. He knows….
6:30PM — I need to be reassured. I cannot believe on week 14 I need to resort to this, with the entire NFC Playoffs still to be determined it feels like it already has. Oh, the horror! Damn you, Tom Coughlin! To hell with you, Bum Phillips’ spawn. Same to you…whoever the coach of Green Bay is! I cannot call New England ….not yet. I could try Peyton perhaps, plan 1A if you will, but realize he is probably busy shooting a commercial or something.
7:30PM – I open one eye as I slowly scan down week #15. It cannot be. The sweat oozes out of my pores. Dallas is at home. Strike one. Then I realize they play T.O.’s old friends, the Philadelphia Eagles. Strike two. Andy Reid and his hang-dog expression….I cannot say anything negative. Can’t kick a man when he’s down. He has gone through a lot this year and does not need me to say that he is in charge of an underachieving, pouting, no-going to title games anymore bunch of babies. Maybe they can rally and pull an upset. Maybe I need to call New England….to whom they call, “The Hooded One”….

Week #15 Sneak Peek Essentials
Good news, bad news friends. The NFL Network has the first two games of the week, but if you do not have this station you will not be missing much….
(6-7) DENVER AT (6-7) HOUSTON
Playing for pride these, Denver has not met expectations this season. Houston Coach Gary Kubiak has the Texans about where they should be.
(5-8) CINCINNATI AT (3-10) SAN FRANCISCO
Both teams out of hope, the Bengals are also a team that has not filled their promise. They need to take a good, hard look at the makeup of that team, character and otherwise. Carson Palmer is not getting any younger either.
(7-6) TENNESSEE AT (4-9) KANASAS CITY
Whew, another dog. The Titans imploded a year’s worth of work in about ½ hour versus San Diego. Can they reboot and make a statement in the AFC playoff race?
(7-6) BUFFALO AT (8-5) CLEVELAND
Ah, there. That’s better. A meaningful game with all kinds of playoff implications, wildcard-style. Buffalo is one game on the outside looking in. Cleveland has what they want, namely inside playoff positioning. A Buffalo win puts them in that spot. Should be a good one as both team are playing above their heads all season.
(9-4) SEATTLE AT (5-8) CAROLINA
Here is the kind of moment that Seattle is famous for showing the NFL that they are not meant for prime-time. A meaningless opponent, they should strap it on and come out smoking. They do have the #3-seed to take care of as well. Carolina continues their inept campaign.
(4-8, pending) BALTIMORE AT (0-13) MIAMI
Best hope for Miami to avoid the 0-16 train from smashing into them. At home, Miami needs to take advantage of a Baltimore team filled with drama and strife.
(3-10) NY JETS AT (13-0) NEW ENGLAND
Yes, the Patriots are at home. Yes, Belichick is frothing at having his old pal Eric Mangini back in town. The Patriots are back in business after pasting Pittsburgh. I am afraid to think about this…
(6-7) ARIZONA AT (5-7, pending) NEW ORLEANS
Another non-descript one with another under-achiever in New Orleans. The runner-up in the NFC last year, the Saints helped invigorate a town shocked by its misfortune. Now its football team is the one reeling and at times helpless.
(9-4) JACKSONVILLE AT (9-4) PITTSBURGH
Oh, I just got a black and blue on my arm just thinking about this one. A bruiser on tap in the Steel City, but the Steelers had better recover quickly from their Patriot-drubbing. Jacksonville likes to bang (as does Pittsburgh) and at times looks elite (as does Pittsburgh). These are mirror-images of one another. Ironically, if Pittsburgh wins it could spell a playoff matchup between the two with Pittsburgh hosting as the #3 seed.
(11-2) GREEN BAY AT (3-10) ST. LOUIS
Another opportunity for the Pack to stay healthy, look good and keep momentum of a very surprising season going. No reason to think Green Bay won’t lay the wood like they did against Oakland.
(3-9, pending) ATLANTA AT (8-5) TAMPA BAY
Atlanta, having been bitten by Vick’s ongoing issues, have shown no life this season. They look to upend a Tampa Bay team that got bitten themselves versus Houston. Tampa has their division locked but they want to finish strong and contend for the #3 seed versus Seattle.
(10-2, pending) INDIANAPOLIS AT (4-9) OAKLAND
Oh-oh. Another beatdown on the schedule for Oakland ahead or so it appears. The Colts need to keep sharp and not have a let down before the rigors of the playoffs.
(5-8) PHILADELPHIA AT (12-1) DALLAS
Divison rivals square off but Dallas has had their number in recent meetings. No reason to believe they will not turn and punch the Eagles squarely in the face next Sunday. 13-1 unless there is a miracle.
(6-7) DETROIT AT (8-5) SAN DIEGO
If you want to be the best, you not only have to beat the best but beat the weak and mediocre as well. San Diego needs to stay on track and ensure all that there is no more drama in their building. Detroit probably let their season slip away against Dallas. Can they show the heart of a playoff contender by rebounding against a studded-San Diego team?
(6-7) WASHINGTON AT (9-4) NY GIANTS
Which Eli will suit up at home against division rival Washington? Should be a scrap but if the Giants are serious about knocking out whispers of previous second-half failures this is another good place to make such a statement.
(5-8) CHICAGO AT (7-6) MINNESOTA
If you had to guess before the season started which team would be 7-6 and in playoff position, the money would have said Chicago. In the midst of a terrible campaign, the Bears shuffle off to Minny to play their long-time rival. Someone had better check Adrian Peterson and see if he is ready to go physically. 14 carries for 4 yards for this dude – something is wrong up North.
Dallas Cowboys Playa Hater Journal #2
8:00 AM – Awake with a pit in my stomach. I still do not know who won last night’s game because no one I know could get the game on TV. I don’t have a good feeling about this…not at all.
I do not like the idea of the game being in Dallas. Favre is old too. I eye my television suspiciously, deciding when to get the details.
8:30 AM – Shouldn’t have had that expired orange juice. That and the stress of not knowing what happened in the Packers-Cowboys game is killing me. I have to find out.
I realize my first journal entry was called, “Why America and I hate the Cowboys”. I feel guilty as I should not be speaking for America in assuming that everyone hates the Cowboys. I think about renaming the journal in a more realistic fashion, with the title “Why 95% of America and I hate the Cowboys”, but think the better of it.
9:00 AM – Oh God. It’s worse than I would have imagined. Not only did the Cowboys win, but they hurt my starting quarterback (every team the Cowboys play is my team that week, henceforth their quarterback by definition becomes my quarterback). #4 knocked around pretty good in the loss. This is bad. Not Pamela Anderson-acting bad, but bad.
9:30 AM – I realize now that my #1 NFC weapon in Green Bay has gone down in flames. I did not expect that reinforcements would be needed from the AFC in my mind so early in the season, but it may be necessary. Not only will the NFC Playoffs go through Dallas, but it may be Green Bay that has to come back after this beating and try to win here in January. Hey, Green Bay did hang with Dallas for a good while….maybe there is hope after all.
10:30 AM – I realize that the Cowboys are 11-1 and that cheesy-smiling Romo must be quite pleased with himself. Yes, he must be.
2:00 PM – Place an emergency call to Texas Stadium to see if Jerry Jones can rehire Bill Parcells. I realize in a panic that the only person in the NFL that may be able to stop Romo is Parcells. Who else would have kept Romo on the bench thankfully for years?
6:00 PM – Check schedule to see if there is any hope for next week. I see the Cowboys travel to Detroit. Oh no! This cannot be good. Schizo-Lions could be manhandled by Cowboys leading to an ungodly 12-1 start. I take some Tums and pray for my quarterback, John Kitna.
O’ Brother, What Art Thou-The Manning Brand Takes A Hit
O Brother, What Art Thou? If your Sister was Christie Brinkley, would you strike that pose before a camera? If your Father was an Einstein, would you pick up that microscope? If your Uncle had the last name of Jordan, would you embarrass yourself driving the lane? If your Father and Brother were Mannings, would you have the want to bark signals under Center? If your name is Eli, starting quarterback for the storied New York Giants, then the answer almost from birth was inevitably, yes.
Pedigree and risk-aversion is the daily double that NFL Executives like to put money down on at the window. So much so that the Giants shifted, pulled and pried their future upside-down in order to secure the rights to the new version of the Manning Brand. What less risky proposition than to mortgage your organization’s future on a quarterback stamped with the official Manning label? The assumption among Giants’ brass was that back in the home plant in Mississippi, production was working on the next generation Manning. A new, not necessarily affordable, shiny model to drive the G-Men back to prominence for the next decade.
Eli’s performance sprung a leak right off the lot, and with no warrantee to fall back on, the scent of lemon is becoming thicker and thicker in the Meadowlands. This model is certainly not like anything the Manning Brand ever put out previously. Duller, less vibrant….something askew. The younger Manning has shown flashes of brilliance, not unlike his counterpart in Chicago, Rex Grossman. However, the expectation for a player stamped with the fabled Manning Brand is inevitably much greater than your typical young buck coming out of the college ranks. But hey, if you leverage the Manning Brand to get that humungous contract, you better back it up with a guaranteed Manning Brand performance on Sundays. No one from Brand Manning was complaining when the contract was signed and still wet. The Giants payed a king’s ransom for the Manning Brand in cash and draft positioning. This alone because of the Manning Brand’s reputation of excellence. Minimalize your risk.
Some critics suggest that the Big Apple is too complex for the mild-mannered Eli, sentiment being that a change of scenery would breathe new life into the younger Manning’s career. The line of sight is still the same on Sundays. If you can read a defense, you can read a defense. If you make poor decisions, those decisions more likely than not will not improve in Baltimore or Jacksonville.
Ex-teammate Tiki Barber lashed out at Eli, questioning his leadership abilities. In fairness to Eli there hasn’t been much griping about him from his current Giants teammates, although you know frustration with his inconsistent play grows by the quarter. Veterans such as Michael Strahan are on the clock. They do not have time to suffer from such inconsistent play. Manning is showing the strain that coming up empty provides, especially with the Manning Brand’s reputation at stake.
So the Giants are forced to wait….and wait…and wait. The words “potential”, “expectation” and “future” were mantras bandied about with concern to the Manning Brand in New York when Eli began having his woes in the pros. When one moves forward in a career and does not live up to that promise, words ring hollow. Those not as fortunate to have the Manning Brand precede them, begin to resent the bonus baby whose Brand paved the way to a massive, still as of yet unearned contract. Those who share only the name on the front of the jersey begin to resent the cash, the notoriety, the name of the back which is the Brand label. They’ll give you the benefit of the doubt but you had better lead, lead well and most importantly, win.
Eli until now is what he is. Set aside in the corner the Brand, the contract and the fanfare. He is an average signal-caller that would be scuffling for his status as starting quarterback if not for The Brand. The Manning Brand has afforded him riches beyond any normal person’s wildest dreams. To not back up that kind of nepotistic fortune with real deeds makes for resentful teammates and fans alike. Comparisons to Peyton are inevitable. Comparisons to the inconsistent Rex Grossman are realistic. Comparisons to expectations of Eli first coming into the league are ridiculous. Giant fans root for Eli because The Brand has forced a monopoly on quarterbacking the Giants. Giant Nation has been sold The Brand, believed in The Brand and watched an earlier production of The Brand win a Super Bowl sporting Hall Of Fame credentials. Even New Coke had potential.
NBA West Preview
WEST
———
OVERVIEW
—————-
The power and the glory of the NBA resides West of the Mississippi. Although the Eastern Conference has stripped the West of Kevin Garnett, the best basketball in the world is still played here. The Western Conference is once again locked and loaded for a super-competitive season.
There is no shortage of storylines either. Can the San Antonio finally cement their right to call their run a dynasty? Will Steve Nash and company in Phoenix finally get over the hump and into the finals? What about Dallas? Last year’s wonder-team blasted through the regular season to earn the #1 seed, only to get wasted in the first round by an inferior Golden State team coached by their former mentor (current tor-mentor), Don Nelson. Can they pick up where they left off from last year’s regular season and finally win their NBA title? Others such as Houston feel they have what it takes to get into the deep waters of the playoffs.
NORTHWEST
———————–
The trade that brought Allen Iverson to the Nuggets last year sent joy throughout the Rocky Mountains. Alas, if you wished to create a permanent place in the first round of the playoffs for your team, you have found your man. The pairing of Iverson and Carmelo Anthony is a potent one, but if you have two stars on your team and want to do some damage deep into the playoffs, their names better be Kobe and Shaq. Marcus Camby helps provide rebounding and length but there is something that just isn’t gelling. They are competitive and fun to watch but when the chips are down count them out.
Shame on Kevin McHale for not being able to surround one of the best players in the world, Kevin Garnett, with a suitable cast to compete for an NBA title. The Timberwolves had what is the most important and difficult element to find in in the NBA, a selfless big man that can score down low, rebound and play great defense. Otherwise he is not much of a player. Garnett has become the toast of the NBA now in Boston, while Minnesota will now flounder in mediocrity. This team is officially terrible. They received several players in return for Garnett, but quantity nowhere equaled the quality they gave up. Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes and Antoine Walker will not get it done.
The Portland Trail Blazers will be better in the future but now is not their time. They have seemed to have cleaned up their act and have brought in better character guys. I like Brandon Roy at Guard. He has the potential to rival the other big-time guards in the West as time moves on. Lamarcus Aldridge has potential as well to be a good but not great scorer. They now must be patient and wait for Greg Oden to heal. Oden, the #1 draft choice out of Ohio State, is considered their savior and rightfully so. With a flair for great defense and the ability to score some, Oden can anchor the paint there for the next decade if healthy.
The Seattle Supersonics are brutal. I can put it no other way. Their hope is rookie Kevin Durant, the overall #2 pick in the draft out of Texas. They are young and not talented (a fatal combination) and they will fit snugly in the bottom of the standings.
The Utah Jazz just keep moving along. Gone are the days of Stockton and Malone, henceforth known as the glory days in Utah. Jerry Sloan keeps law and order as the wily veteran coach, but with a new and interesting cast of characters. I love Deron Williams. He is their point guard (but don’t tell anybody) and is one of the most exciting young players in the league. Although only a second-year player, he leads the team vocally and by example. He called out teammates in the off-season for packing it in too early last year in the playoffs. This although the Jazz reached the Western Conference Finals. Carlos Boozer is a great Power Forward and complements Williams well to form a kind of Stockton-Malone lite (a little more filling and not as great taste as the original but still tasty). They overachieved in the playoffs last year but gained a lot of experience in the process.
SUMMARY
A very weak division overall. A lot of hype in Denver for their two-man gang but more talk than action when things matter there. Portland, Seattle and Minnesota are trying to find their way but have no chance this season to even make the playoffs. The cream of the crop here is Utah, who will win the division by default more so than blinding ability.
PACIFIC
The Los Angeles scene will be on its head this season as the Clippers will take hold of bragging rights to the Staples Center. The media and fans will not realize it however, begging the question: If a team gets better than another team and no one notices, does it really matter? Although the Clippers are better than the Lakers, that does not mean much as they still need to defeat others teams in the league. The loss of Guard Shaun Livingston hurts their chances. Elton Brand when healthy is a force at Forward and he is good for 18 and 10 almost any night. However, his health is a big question coming into the season. Chris Kaman is back from his year-long vacation and should have a good year. I do not like their chemistry and they have too many chuckers for my taste. Still should be better than last year and will secure a playoff berth.
Kobe, Kobe, Kobe. Kobe Bryant got what he wished for and now does not want what he wished for. A watered down roster where he can shine is not all that it is cracked up to be. Kobe is good for 35 a night it seems. That is where the fun ends. Lamar Odom is the softest 2nd best player on a team I maybe have ever seen. He is not Scottie Pippen, although I am not sure if Scottie Pippen was Scottie Pippen looking back, and is starting to wear down at this point in his career as well. Zen mastery is not as much fun for Phil Jackson when he does not have the most talented team as he has for most of his Head Coaching career. It goes to show that it is a player’s league. To coach you better have among the top 5 in talent in the NBA if you hope to compete at the elite level. Do not expect too much from the Lakers this year and you will not be disappointed. Your centers are Kwame Brown, Andrew Bynum and Chris Mihm—oy!
The Sacramento Kings remember only a few years ago when they had an exciting squad that came thisclose to the finals. Ah, the good old days!! Unfortunately this is not your older Brother’s Kings. It may not even be the “Queens” as Shaq used to say. Maybe the “Jokers” would be more appropriate. Trade rumors swirl around an already aging Mike Bibby, as he is the team’s best chance to move forward with his subtraction. It is the 9th year for Bibby already. Everyone’s favorite, Ron Artest, has been quiet as of late. Good behavior does not necessarily equate into success however. A boring team headed by ex-showboater Reggie Theus. Not a good fit and not a good team.
Golden State is a fun team to watch, and had a marvelous run in the playoffs featuring a squashing of the #1 seed Dallas Mavericks last Spring. An upset for the ages, the team played over their heads, with ex-Mavs coach Don Nelson getting into the heads of his old team I believe. So a perfect storm enabled the Warriors to show some life in the playoffs. There was a reason they were the #8 seed to begin with let’s not forget. They are led by Baron Davis, a feisty point guard who has a flair for being clutch and is a floor general. Stephen Jackson, former problem-child of the Pacers, has supposedly cleaned up his act by the Bay and is providing leadership (are you kidding?) to a relatively young team. An overrated coach that does rise to the occasion on occasion, Nelson looks tired and sometimes bemused by his position. I do not have much faith in them that last year’s playoffs were the real Warriors.
I wish we could have a league with 8 teams, with one of them being the Suns. When the elite teams get together it is like a different league, with some of the best basketball ever seen being played. Phoenix if it were a player would be classified as a “stud”. They have a high powered, high-wire offense that normally leaves opponents’ defense in tatters. Unfortunately the elite teams many times can do the same to the Phoenix defense. They try to ignore their Achilles heal by outscoring teams. In the regular season it works. In the playoffs not so good. Last year it seemed they were poised to break through and were neck and neck with the San Antonio Spurs in their playoff series. A little short and a little late and the Spurs went on to their 4th title. The team does have a few questions that need to be answered. Steve Nash is the best point guard in the NBA. He is up there in years and is slight. Can he withstand the heat for upwards of 100 games in an environment where he needs to be a huge part of their offense for them to win? He needs to be paced, and that is where Leandro Barbosa may be their most important player as weird as it sounds. He is an energetic guard that can distribute the ball well. Learning under Nash has helped his game plenty. I cannot tell if Shawn Marion is overrated or underrated. He is also a whiner that wants out of Phoenix but they may try to hold him in place for what could be their final serious run. Amare Stoudemire is a state of the art center that can jump out of the gym and lead a team in scoring and rebounds on any given night. They are loaded.
SUMMARY
The reputation of the teams in the Pacific are better than what you will see on the court this season. The best team far and away is Phoenix, who should cruise to the division title. The Clippers are the best of the rest and should be in the playoffs. For the others I wish them well in the lottery.
SOUTHWEST
The New Orleans Hornets seem younger than they are. However, the roster headed by Coach Byron Scott is not up to the speed of the higher-end models in the division. Scott, who led New jersey to back-to-back finals in what seems ages ago, is not known for his x’s and o’s. He must have big-time talent on his team in order to compete (he does not). Chris Paul is the team’s shining light. A 6’ guard out of Wake Forest, Paul is an exciting playmaker if undersized. He will need a much better cast around him though. Tyson Chandler shows signs of coming out of his professional basketball coma last year but that is more on the rebounding end than elsewhere. A borderline playoff team in a loaded division.
How will the Rockets survive without Jeff Van Gundy? Remember all the playoff series won under Jeff? Neither do I. When your franchise is an enigma, there is only one Coach to call upon—Rick Adelman. Adelman is a curious choice as he himself never led any of his teams to an NBA title, although he has shown the ability to take teams very deep into the playoffs at Portland and Sacramento. Time will tell if his system can work in success-starved Houston. The cubbard is far from bare. Houston has underachieved during the Tracy McGrady-Yao Ming era to say the least. No playoff series won – period. McGrady’s teams just do not do well in the playoffs and there is no excuse for it. He is an electric scorer that does not believe in defense. Yao is a force in the middle and is slowly improving his game. Technique aside, many question his ability to carry a team deep into the playoffs. Does he have the heart of a champion? Very questionable until now. The balance of the roster is pedestrian. The addition of Luis Scola out of Argentina will help.
The league is filled with two kinds of stars. Ones that have proven to produce championship hardware (not many of them admittedly), and those that get paid bundles of jack and have excellent regular seasons. The formerly mentioned McGrady falls into the latter class, as does Dirk Nowitzki. History has shown us you need to have “The Man” on your team when the chips are down in May and June. They have everything in place for a deep run potentially save this element. Is Dirk that guy? He had better be if the Mavs are to compete. Avery Johnson is a fiery leader and a great motivator. He also has an incredible regular season record and could do no wrong until last Spring. The question still exists: what the heck happened? They were the #1 seed with the best record in the NBA and got schooled by the Warriors. There is no excuse, and I am not sure they have patched up what was wrong from last season. Jason Terry is a clutch-shooting guard that is Avery’s extension on the court. Josh Howard is a smooth Wake Forest product who will be counted on to carry the load throughout the season. I like watching their up and down style. However, like the Suns they are a bit light in their Converse.
Memphis—the Tampa Bay Devil Rays of the NBA Southwest. The most intriguing thing about this team is whether or not their star player, Pau Gasol will be traded as has been discussed constantly over the past year or so. A really bad team mired and unable to get out of its own way.
Finally we come to the reigning NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs. With an uncanny ability to pluck the juiciest b-ball fruit from around the world, this organization has been the gold standard going on a decade. From Coach on down they unassumingly go about their championship-level business as quietly as any dynasty I have ever seen. Coach Greg Popovich has won 4 NBA titles with San Antonio, only 1 less than Pat Riley. By the noise level, you would have thought that Riley won his and Pop’s. San Antonio’s star player right now is not Tim Duncan, but Tony Parker. The NBA Finals MVP showed leadership and toughness and is expected to produce it all again this season. Former MVP Duncan is a hall-of-famer in waiting that is the best low-post player this generation and maybe the best power forward ever. Manu Ginobili is a terror-slasher that makes terrific plays with flair in an otherwise conservative environment. Duncan is up there in years and needs somehow to be paced.
SUMMARY
Texas sports the best basketball in North America if you are calculating volume. All 3 of their teams are in the Southwest, which should make for some serious infighting throughout the season. I say that half of the West’s playoff entries will come from this division. Probably the best division in the NBA, only Memphis is a weak Sister and can be counted out. New Orleans will sneak into the playoffs on the lower-tier. Dallas still has the goods to win the division and should by a few games. The Spurs and Rockets should both be outstanding as well, fighting it out for a first-round home advantage.

NBA East Preview
EAST
———
ATLANTIC
—————-
It is nary a week into the new NBA season and it is always a good time to check on the Association. First things first—this is not your Grandmama’s Eastern Conference. The East is a new and shiny model that handles better than last year. Not up to the S-Class that is the Western Conference by any stretch of the imagination, but you can see the balance of power shifting ever so slightly from the Pacific.
Everyone’s darling is Boston these days. Not so fast I say. Time will test the glorious trio of Garnett-Allen-Pierce. On paper it looks sweet. In reality they each have lots of tread off their tires, and their teammates do not instill fear in anyone. It is a great nucleus on top for the first 50 games of the season. However, you need to play 82 plus win 4 post-season series to win it all—that is a long road with guys that are long in the tooth.
The same case can be stated regarding New Jersey. I am not sold on their trio either when it comes to going the distance. Jason Kidd is one of the best point guards in the game. His court vision, spurred by the presence of Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson is formidable. Will Vince Carter earn his formidable keep and go to the hole after February when his legs tire? However, I have seen this show before. It ends with no rings as it does every year in New Jersey. I will take it a step further and say it will not even end in a playoff berth for the Nets. Their coach is on the hot seat as well.
I like Toronto spearheaded by Chris Bosh. He is a smooth 7 footer that given time can lead the Raptors into the deeper portion of the playoffs, just not this year. They are on the right track but still in the slow lane.
The Knicks would be better if Isiah were at point guard rather than coach. With all their issues they are more interesting in the courtroom than on the court. I can hear Jim Mora now. Playoffs? Playoffs?
76ers—the trade of Allen Iverson was said to be the undoing of the team. It would not be the first time a disgruntled character made things better by their disappearance. I saw them versus Bulls the other night and they are better than advertised. Coach Mo Cheeks has the team playing hard and playing good D. They can be more competitive than you think.
SUMMARY—Boston is the class of the division. Toronto is on the come, while New Jersey lives off the reputation of their big three. Isiah and “Starbury” consider it a successful year by staying away from the bondsman.
CENTRAL
On paper this should be a really good division with Detroit, Cleveland and Chicago all fighting it out for supremacy. However, there are chinks in this division’s armor.
The Pistons are the old guard. It has become commonplace for them to ascend to the conference finals, but for all the fanfare, they have won it all only once, and have slipped from Finals to Conference Finals level play. It will still be hard to unseat them not because they are so superior, but because there is no other team in the division ready to take them over and stay there. It is getting closer though.
The backcourt of Hamilton and Billups is still one of the best in the NBA. Saavy and cocksure, they play well off each other. The underrated Tayshaun Prince provides great defense, but in my view they still miss Ben Wallace providing the last line of defense in the middle. He was the perfect fit in Detroit, and although he is stinking it up at the United Center these days, his shortcomings were camouflaged brilliantly with the Pistons.
The Cavs are a one-hit wonder in multiple ways. They have arguably the best talent in the NBA in Lebron James. His supporting cast should not have been good enough last year to make it to the finals, reminiscent of AI in his 76ers finals run several years ago. With the rest of the East improved and the Cavs not, they will slip back to the middle of the pack.
The Bulls had high hopes before the season, and were considered a chic pick by many to go to the NBA finals. An 0-4 start has dampened spirits in Chicago. When will they get a low post scorer? Kobe to the Bulls talk is rampant, but do the Lakers want what the Bulls have been cooking so far? Same problems-different season.
Milwaukee and Indiana bring up the rear in the Central. Yi brings a new look to the Bucks. Michael Redd is one of the most underrated players in the NBA, but for the Bucks it is a nickel short and a day late to compete this season.
Same is true for the Pacers, who are still looking to trade Jermaine O’Neal but have not found the right offer until now. Maybe L-Bird can suit up at least to bolster attendance and spirits in Hoosier-Land.
SUMMARY—Pistons still the class but are slowly coming back to the pack. Bulls and Cavs are the upstarts that think they both can make it to the Finals. Not happening for either this season.
SOUTHEAST
A three horse race that is intriguing on paper but alas, can old and young alike withstand the rigors of an 82 game season….that’s why they play the games.
Although I do not think Miami will win the division I do think they have the best chance of the Southeast teams to win the Conference. Any time you still have D-Wade and Shaq in the lineup, with the Slickster calling the plays, you have a puncher’s chance. The question is the health of all of them. Dwayne Wade first and foremost needs to prove that he has the physical presence to withstand 82 games and then the postseason. He is an awesome talent…a championship talent as proven a couple of years ago. What about Shaq? A 4th ring two years ago showed he still had the goods post-Kobe, but a sweep last year at the hands of the Bulls may have proven otherwise. He needs to be strong down the stretch for them to have any chance. Riley looks tired on the sidelines as he may be realizing that his brainchild may have seen its best day in Miami.
The up and comer in the division is the Orlando Magic. I think Dwight Howard is a future MVP, but it is a little early in his career for him to lead a team to the Promised Land.
The most overrated team in the East may be the Washington Wizards. I do not like the chemistry of this team. Too many guys liking to take too many shots for my liking. Where the D? Agent zero—you’re not kidding. Not happening in DC.
Atlanta and Charlotte—interesting cities with fattening yet tasty cuisine.
SUMMARY—Orlando the class during the regular season. However, a healthy D-Wade and Shaq can whip up on anyone when right in the East.

NFL Week 13 Review, Week 14 Preview
Week 13: Steelers de-fang Bengals, can rewrite history versus 11-0 “Greatriots”
Before playing their most important game since their Super Bowl victory, the Pittsburgh Steelers once again had to overcome a soggy Heinz Field track on a national stage. By finally not playing down to their level of competition, the Steelers utilized their core strengths of running attack and defense to overmatch Cincinnati. Next up in New England is an opportunity for the Steelers to break the most serious bid for a perfect season in the NFL since the Miami Dolphins accomplished the feat over 30 years ago. This provided the Pats can get by the Ravens tonight.
Here’s a look at week # 13’s highlights, the current playoff picture and a peek at week #14’s key match ups in the NFL:
(9-3) PITTSBURGH 24 (4-8) CINCINNATI 10
Stockpiling 17 points in the second quarter helped Pittsburgh to a comfortable 24-10 win at home versus their division rival. Hines Ward hauled in 11 balls for 90 yards, while the stingy Steelers defense coughed up only 75 yards on the ground. Ben Roethlisberger managed the game effectively, going 21-32, for 184 yards and 2 TD’s.
(8-4) NEW YORK GIANTS 21 (5-7) CHICAGO 16
In Chicago the Bears dealt themselves a crushing blow to their playoff chances and will need nothing less than a perfect ending to the season in order to have an opportunity to advance. The G-men outscored the Bears 14-0 in the 4th quarter to seal Chicago’s fate. Eli Manning (16-27, 195 yards) was his inconsistent self, but helped the Giants storm back in the decisive 4th quarter. Manning outplayed Rex Grossman late in the game, but to Grossman’s credit he played well throughout (25-46, 296 yards). Derrick Ward rolled for 154 yards for Big Blue in the victory. The Giants won despite committing 4 turnovers while the Bears committed none. The Giants are attempting to outrun an Achilles heel for them in recent seasons of finishing seasons terribly. At 8-4 the Giants now sit a comfortable 2 games in front of their nearest wildcard rivals. Home playoff game at the Meadowlands coming up unless another end-of-season disaster strikes.
The Giants win may have serious implications concerning the Patriots run to perfection. How so? I checked my handy-dandy NFL schedule and should the Patriots be 15-0, they will play with it all on the line versus the Giants at the Meadowlands. Thanks to today’s victory, the Giants at 8-4 have a cushy 2 game lead over the next closest wildcard foe. Game 16 as a result may not mean much for New York, while a loss today may have meant an all-out assault on New England that night.
Now the bad news. Remember the Dallas-Green Bay game on the NFL Network that many fans could not see? Guess which station the Patriots-Giants game is scheduled to be on Saturday, December 29th? None other than the NFL Network. The NFL Network—where history can happen and no one can see it!
(8-4) TAMPA BAY 27 (5-7) NEW ORLEANS 23
Tampa Bay continued to roll along as New Orleans will probably need to go 4-0 as well if they entertain any hopes of moving on. Outgained 466-246, last year’s NFC runner-up still had the game in hand but attempted a double-reverse that was fumbled and recovered by the Bucs. The Bucs capitalized and scored the game winning touchdown with time winding down. Joey Galloway led the Bucs with 7 receptions for 155 yards. John Gruden has his team cruising to a division title after a long dry spell following their Super Bowl victory.
(6-6) ARIZONA 27 (7-5) CLEVELAND 21
Arizona kept their playoff hopes alive with a surprise escape over Cleveland. Cleveland has a case to complain as Kellen Winslow Jr. was forced out of the end zone after making what could have been the game winning grab. Something needs to be done about that rule. Edgerrin James was clutch with a buck-14 on the ground for the Cardinals in the win. Both teams have surprisingly good records affording them a sniff at a playoff spot in their respective conferences.
(7-5) SAN DIEGO 24 (4-8) KANSAS CITY 10
The Chiefs’ season continues to slide down the drain as the Chargers are trying to keep pace with earlier expectations. San Diego’s LaDainian Tomlinson scooted for 177 yards and 2 TD’s in the win, while Tight End Tony Gonzalez himself had 10 receptions for 140 yards in the defeat. San Diego keeps a leg up as a result in the putrid AFC West. They can be the team that no one wants to entertain come playoff time if they remain consistent.
(10-2) INDIANAPOLIS 28 (8-4) JACKSONVILLE 25
In deciding the AFC South, the Colts behind Peyton Manning’s 4 touchdown passes turned away the latest challenge from the Jaguars. Jacksonville again comes close but cannot seal the deal and wrestle the division away from Indianapolis. It should be onto the playoffs for the Jags but just not as division champs.
(6-6) MINNESOTA 42 (6-6) DETROIT 10
Hard to believe both teams have identical records as the Vikings were charged by the return of stud Adrian Peterson (15 carries for 116 yards). Quarterback Tavares Jackson continues to improve as well with 2 touchdowns on the day. Watch out for Minny down the stretch. They are getting improved QB play that will open the offense together with the spectacular Peterson, who should be rookie of the year.
(8-4) SEATTLE 28 (5-7) PHILADELPHIA 24
Seattle and Mike Holmgren maintained its grip on their division with a 4 point win over Philly. Philly’s disappointing season continues and they are a game back and muddled with several teams at 5-7. Shaun Alexander rushed for 65 yards in the victory, while Brian Westbrook ran for 93 yards and caught 46 more for Philly. Seattle is in the driver’s seat in their division while Philly is fading.
(6-6) BUFFALO 17 (5-7) WASHINGTON 16
Buffalo’s star-crossed season continues but this week found them for a change on destiny’s side. Reeling from the tragedy of the death of teammate Sean Taylor, the Redskins were game at home but were turned away by a Rian Lindell FG as time expired. Washington Head Coach Joe Gibbs was penalized 15 yards to enable the game winning field goal as he did not know the rule concerning calling back-to-back timeouts in attempting to “ice” Lindell. The Bills deserve tons of credit in winning in an understandably emotional environment. Washington is falling off the radar while Buffalo keeps hope alive.
(11-1) DALLAS 37 (10-2) GREEN BAY 27 (THURSDAY)
The road to the Super Bowl in the NFC will almost certainly go through Dallas as the Cowboys set back the Pack in Big-D. Tony Romo threw for 4 touchdowns, while Terrell Owens caught 7 passes for 151 yards in prime-time. The Packers were called for 142 yards in penalties while losing their starting QB Brett Favre to multiple injuries. The Pack will need to win at Dallas in January if they entertain any ideas of Brett Favre returning to the big stage.
( 11-0) NEW ENGLAND AT (4-7) BALTIMORE
Monday Night
0-16 “SLEEPING WITH THE FISHES” WATCH
The watch is alive, well and at 0-12 thanks to the Jets’ (rising to 3-9 themselves) drubbing of the Dolphins 40-13. Four games left to prove their manhood. Let’s take a peek and see how the odds look:
Week 14 – @ Buffalo – smells fishy
Week 15 – Baltimore – less fishy
Week 16 – @ New England – a 70-spot may be dropped on a Brotha’
Week 17 – Cincinnati – medium-fishy

Week #14 Sneak Peek Essentials (5-7) CHICAGO AT (5-7) WASHINGTONStill reeling from the death of teammate Sean Taylor, the Redskins face not only a rugged Bears team coming off a disastrous loss to the Giants but a short week to deal with it all to boot. A playoff game for both teams as the loser is out while the winner still holds hope. (9-3) PITTSBURGH AT (11-0) NEW ENGLAND
Game of the week where the Steelers look to knock off the Patriots and end their dreams of history. A tall order as New England has been all-time good and are at home. They will also look to make a statement against a potential playoff foe.
(11-1) DALLAS AT (6-6) DETROIT
A thumping awaits Detroit at home as Dallas has been the class of the conference for weeks. Detroit’s up-and-down performance does not bode well in the face of the heat that the Cowboys will employ.
(4-8) OAKLAND AT (10-2) GREEN BAY
Aaron Rogers filled in admirably in the loss to Dallas for Brett Favre. Green Bay has lots of season left and can right the ship at home versus an anemic Raiders team.
(8-4) TAMPA BAY AT (5-7) HOUSTON
Tampa Bay has the division sealed and is on a hot 4 game win streak. Houston is having a weak campaign mired at the bottom of the dangerous AFC South.
(0-12) MIAMI AT (6-6) BUFFALO
A must-have for Buffalo if they entertain any hopes of the post-season. They cannot afford a letdown after a huge, emotional win in DC. Miami is desperate to avoid a record of futility for the ages.
(5-7) CAROLINA AT (8-4) JACKSONVILLE
Jacksonville is thisclose to being a top-tier team but every time they sniff the leader board they fall short. Disappointing Carolina playing out the string at this point on the outside of the playoff picture looking in.
(7-5) SAN DIEGO AT (7-5) TENNESSEE
San Diego needs this game to prove to themselves that they are back to last season’s form, although they do have a 2 game cushion in their division. The Titans must have this game as they are tied with Cleveland in the wildcard chase and have 6-6 Buffalo nipping at their heels.
(8-4) NEW YORK GIANTS AT (5-7) PHILADELPHIA
What has been a high-stakes showdown the last several years is now New York jockeying to maintain the top wildcard spot. Philly on the other hand is hoping to just survive out the season in what has been another controversial campaign.
(6-6) MINNESOTA AT (3-9) SAN FRANCISCO
The Vikings are charging hard, winning 3 in a row to come back to .500. Tied for the final wildcard spot, Adrian Peterson and Co. look to make further inroads to the playoffs.
(6-6) ARIZONA AT (8-4) SEATTLE
Seattle can clamp down the division with a win over the surprising Cardinals at home on Sunday. The Seahawks have won 4 in a row and look to make a statement in the NFC West.
(7-5) CLEVELAND AT (3-9) NEW YORK JETS
Must win game for the Browns who are in a dog-fight for an AFC wildcard spot. The Jets are playing better and did beat Pittsburgh at the Meadowlands so this game may not be the blowout it appears to be on paper.
(10-2) INDIANAPOLIS AT (4-7) BALTIMORE
Baltimore is always tough at home but Indy is focused and running on their rails again even without great wide-out Marvin Harrison.
Favre’s Last Chance
It is the NFC game of the year. The clock is ticking on Brett Favre’s career. Ticking so loud that you will hear it over the riotous scene that will be Dallas tonight. Brett Favre is fighting back time. His weapons, once lethal on the football field, have stayed by his side just long enough for him to go into combat Tonight with the opportunity to pave the way for an NFC Title game in the Frozen Tundra that is Green Bay. Time is an enemy that no one can defeat. Brett Favre has an opportunity to make it look otherwise.
In the darkest recesses of the subconscious of Brett Favre’s mind, there is the knowledge that time is drawing thin. The pressure to win in Big D is such that a loss almost certainly equals a return trip to Dallas in January. The odds of Green Bay going down Tonight and then winning the NFC Title Game back at the Cowboys are long. For all intents and purposes, the last chance for Brett Favre to go to a Super Bowl rides on a victory this week in Dallas.
Once upon a time Favre had the clock on his side. If Green Bay lost in a key matchup years ago, it stung but they were a team on the come. Next year would be their turn. They had Mike Holmgren calling shots. They had the late, great Reggie White anchoring a bruising defense. They too had Favre. Favre too had time.
Opportunity in this NFL is a fickle mistress. At 10-1 the Packers are the surprise darlings of the NFL. Having retired from the big stage in recent seasons, the Packers have this opportunity, bright lights and all, to once again steal the spotlight. Tonight will be a hostile environment to be sure. Favre knows this stage. Many of his teammates do not. Some say their 10-1 has been accomplished by smoke and mirrors. Favre has his fingerprints all over these Packers, and their 10 wins are real enough.
Green Bay and Favre have caught second wind. Critics who called for Favre to step aside in recent years, have had their voices shouted down by the steel of his play. The bigger question is that now that the Packers have this last chance with Favre at the helm, are they and he ready to beat the clock one more time?
Time races forward towards the playoffs. Time races forward for Brett Favre. Opportunity is racing just ahead of Brett Favre for the last time in the Favre era. Can he catch it before time catches him?
